Pulling Punches: How I Booked an NYC Speaking Gig Without Sending a Single Pitch

Katrina Owens (00:00.98)
What's up guys? Welcome back to another episode of KO Your Brands, Pulling Punches. I'm your host, Katrina Owens, top personal branding and public relations expert. As a reminder, pulling punches are short micro episodes designed to give you actionable takeaways, maybe some hot takes, and just enough information to send you on your way into the world so you can start using PR to grow your personal brand too. And at the time of this episode,

Well, by the time this episode is released, most of you will have already found out that I am headed to New York City this August to speak at the Rich Girl Cult Conference in New York City. Holy shit balls. my God, it's like, even feels real to say it out loud. And I mean, this is a secret that I've been carrying around for a couple months. Secret, not secret. There are people out there that have already known this, but the-

the wider population actually doesn't. So what I wanted to do today is to just give you the quick inside scoop on how this opportunity came about because it really illustrates why you should be doing public relations yourself. And, you know, it's really fun for me to actually show you the power of this in action. So.

Let's take it all the way back to fall 2024. I want to say it was like October, November, because this was a time when I was like really feeling my darkest, to be honest. OK, it was November. So this was at a time where, you know, if you've listened to previous episodes, you already know that I was closing down the agency, Sata Mae Business, to realign all of my business efforts with

my vision and my purpose and my values. So it really was doubling down on public relations for personal brands and feeling really confident about the programs and offerings and work that I do in this space. So back in November, I was trying to pull the pieces back together on this brand that you now see here today. And it was on threads.

Katrina Owens (02:13.094)
love threads. mean, you've heard me talk a little bit about threads and the impact that can have on your business. And I'm going to do a few more episodes on threads in the future as well, because it is so powerful. I came across a wonderful woman named Brittany Hahn and her threads. She was saying like everything that like I knew I needed to hear, honestly. She was empowering, but you know,

also a bit triggering, which, you if you know Brittany, you know she can be a little bit triggering, but that's one of like the best parts about her. She's not afraid to tell you how it is. And so I started following her. We started exchanging some messages and she said to me, hey, I'm running a conference in Orlando in March called the Rich Girl Cult Conference. I'd love if you could make it. And I was like, yeah, okay, done.

That sounds like something I really want to go to. And at the time I was in like my lowest revenue month. I was definitely not feeling like a rich girl. That's for sure. But I knew that the future version of me would go to that conference. So I like put myself on the waitlist because she was like doing like her ticket sales and drops. Put myself on the waitlist and then when tickets dropped and I feel like it was on.

Black Friday, I bought mine and I was like, holy shit, I should not be spending this money right now. That was old Katrina. New Katrina is always like, this is exactly what I should be spending my money on. But at the time I was still like feeling a bit nervous and gotten shy, but I bought my ticket, booked my flight, booked my hotel and I'm like, I'm in. And after that, Brittany and I kind of kept in touch and.

Probably a month or two after that, she put out a thread like looking for experts to speak in her membership community. And since Brittany and I already had a little bit of a relationship established, her and I had connected on threads. I had told her that I had bought my ticket for the conference. I was really excited to go and meet her in person. And then when I saw that she was looking for experts, I said, hey, I would love to. And she was like, yes, that would be amazing. I would love for you to come speak to my.

Katrina Owens (04:37.07)
to my membership. she invited me in to do that. So that was probably, I should have looked at the timeline before I recorded this message, but that must have been beginning of February. So a couple months that had gone by since originally buying my ticket, but we put that in the calendar. And then I presented my fame formula, Mastering Public Relations for Personal Brands signature presentation.

I did it in her membership and her community really loved it. Like honestly, I've done a lot of these talks now in certain online communities and memberships and you can always tell how engaged someone's community is by the chat. And this was actually the only community I've spoken at still to this day. And I've probably done like 10 of them at this time, at this point in time. And the chat was popping off. Like people were super engaged with the content that I was sharing.

I could tell that I was having an impact. And after I finished that presentation, Brittany FaceTimed me and I was like, my God, like what have I done? So I answered and Brittany was like, hey, I loved that presentation so much. Would you like to speak at Rich Girl New York? And after I picked my jaw off the floor, I was like, holy shit, yes.

dream come true. And so that was back in February. And then after that, obviously, I had been kind of keeping the secret to myself. Back in March was when Rich Girl Orlando happened. And so at the end of the conference, she brought all of the speakers up to stand on stage and introduce themselves. she was highlighting all the all the rich girls because after that, I actually joined her community. So it's not like I just

was like, yeah, since I'm a speaker, that means I get to like join for free, right? No, I paid Britney money to join her community because I really believe in the work that she does and I love the community of women that she's created. And then at the conference, I got to go up on stage and do a quick little spiel and those were probably the first people that got to find out that I was speaking in August. And so what's really important for you to take away from this story is that

Katrina Owens (07:01.674)
My relationship with Brittany always came first. So it's so funny now because Rich Girl is blowing up. And so I see all of these different threads that Brittany makes. And she tells me about all these different pitches that she gets from people who like are now pitching her to speak at her events, but have no existing relationship with her. I'm like, I know, I know all of these people need to join my fame ready entrepreneur program, honestly, because I will show them the way. But unfortunately, people think

that pitching is the way to get on stages these days. And it really just isn't. It's all relationship driven. And when I bought my ticket to Rich Girl Orlando, it was never because I thought that's what was going to get me on a Rich Girl stage in the future. I just saw it as a great way to expand and grow my international personal brand, which is something that I'm always working on. I knew that having that experience was really going to

pushed me out of my comfort zone when it came to networking. And honestly, I love what Brittany's doing and I wanted to support her and grow our relationship. And then when I spoke inside her membership, it was for the same purpose. I was like, okay, like here's a great way for me to connect with even more women and to get to know Brittany a little bit more and all of that. So I had never done any of these things with this underlying motive of speaking at her event.

I just did it all because I know relationships rule the roost. And so I knew that by continuing to invest in myself through Brittany's events and programs that one day it was gonna pay off. I didn't know how, but I detached myself from this like need to know what the ROI is going to be because we cannot run businesses like that. We cannot think that we are going to know exactly what

return every single tactic or move is going to have in our business. We just have to trust that it will.

Katrina Owens (09:06.166)
And so that's the pulling punches of today. That was my punching noise. Sound effects, not my strong suit. But if you're out there now that the announcement is out that I'll be speaking at Rich Girl New York in August, if you're now like, okay, Katrina, tell me how. That was the how. I never sent a single pitch. I never slid into the DMs with like a, girl, I love your work. It all just came.

from an authentic relationship that I really love and still nurture. And even after Rich Girl New York is over in August, I'm still gonna go to rich girl events. I'm still gonna be a part of the community. I'm still going to invest in other rich girl services because this really cool thing is happening in the rich girl community where we're all investing in each other's services. And that's what the really cool thing

about relationship building and doing your own PR is you guys. Because when you can just approach creating, nurturing, and feeling really like passionate about the relationships that you have and just treating people like people, that's when the magic happens. So as you start to see me on more and more stages, because I mean, I'm talking about this one particular opportunity right now, but there.

There's a couple more on the books that I'll share more details on soon.

But this is I'm doing it. There's no secret formula. There's no secret pitch. But if you want to know exactly how to really start building the types of relationships that get you on more stages, more podcasts in the media, this is what I teach inside the Fame Ready Entrepreneur program.
